9 Books to Break a Reading Drought

We’ve all done it. Read and read and read, book after book. You’re on an unstoppable reading roll and you can’t believe how you are checking books off your to-be-read list.  And then…it just stops. Maybe you get busy or maybe TV has become all too compelling. Either way you’ve lost steam and time passes and you are officially in a reading drought.

So what is a dedicated reader to do? Go for a reading drought breaker! One of those books that are easy and fun and completely enthralling to reignite your gusto for reading! If you are looking for suggestions for your next drought breaker we have some ideas.

1. “Chick Lit” ~ It’s not my favourite genre but there is something so fun about reading a light story. Love, romance, some awkward encounters and a very satisfying ending. It’s the perfect mix to get you going.

We suggest, Sophie Kinsella (the arguable queen of Chick Lit), the soon-to-be published Crazy Rich Asians for a glimpse at how the other half lives and the one that started it all, Bridget Jones’s Diary.

2. Mysteries and Thrillers ~ Get down and dirty with fast paced drama. Enjoy the ride while a crime occurs, a wrong is righted and the guy you are rooting for gets the girl. Compelling and unputdownable mysteries and thrillers are perfect drought breakers.

Our recommended picks, Operation Napoleon for an adventure that spans 3 decades with roots in WWII. Anything Lee Child since his main character Jack Reacher has no problem facing a fight and always seems to get in trouble and finally Defending Jacob for an intricate and thrilling legal drama with a bit of a police procedural.

3. Funny Stuff ~ The ultimate in reading escapism, funny well written books are a reprive and a mood changer. What better way to break a drought than with a good laugh?

If you are looking for a chuckle our go-to books are Up and Down by Terry Fallis (he’s a Leacock Winner!) Practical Jean by Trevor Cole (wait, he’s a winner too!) and of course, Mindy Kaling.

So tell me what I missed? What are your go-to reads to break a reading drought?
